Top 10: resilience skills

1: Have a Positive Mental Attitude: in challenging times, you have to make the best of things.  Seek and you will find…so if you look for difficulty, things to be anxious about – you’ll find them.  Instead, look for opportunity, enhancement, challenge and variety…remember: if you don’t take an opportunity….someone else will!

2:  Build your own stamina bank: ensure you don’t get exhausted, either physically or mentally.  Keep in shape.  This means regular exercise, and also mental distraction and stimulation.  And rest….

3:  Keep a sense of perspective: will anybody die?  However bad it seems, are there others much, much worse off?  Are there others out there who would gladly change places with you, and take on your current job?  If you had been out of work for 12 months, and the job you are in now became available – would you apply for it?

4:  Give something back – and pass it on: it can be very affirming to help others, even if you are feeling low.  It emphasises we all are connected, and however bad it may seem, there is always something you can give to others…which may help create a feel good factor

5:  Take ownership for your response: responsibility is really response-ability: the ability to respond positively and effectively to whatever life puts in front of you.  Remember these two quotes: “you can’t stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf”, and “life deals the cards; we decide how to play them”…

6:  Seek (and find) a positive role model: what have others done, facing similar circumstances?  If they can do it, why can’t you?

7:  Problem solve, rather than worry: the former is constructive, the latter isn’t.  The former leads to solutions, the latter doesn’t.  The former will engage you, help you feel you are doing something (you are!).  The latter will make you feel stuck (you are!).

8: Have excellent support systems: a friend in need….as they say.  Know who your ‘go to’ people are, who will offer the right kind of support.  Don’t be afraid to seek support – those you ask will often be flattered that you sought them out.  If they say no, you are no worse off; if they say yes, then you are much better off – so asking is a no-brainer.  Taklk things through with such people, rather than keep things to yourself…

9:  Challenge what you don’t like, or doesn’t work for you: too often we accept ‘how it is’, when in fact it doesn’t have to be like that.  For example, deadlines have to be set, but does it have to be THAT deadline?

10:  Learn to let things go: this is perahps the most difficult skill to learn, but one of the most enabling.  In particular, let go of those things that you cannot do anything about; things from your past, and things beyond your control.  This will free you up to get on with the things that you CAN do something about…
